About Pacific Whale Foundation
Mission: To protect the ocean through science and advocacy, and to inspire environmental stewardship.
Vision: To be the people’s environmental organization for the global protection of whales, dolphins, and other marine animals living wild in their natural habitat.
Founded in 1980, Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to protecting marine life and fostering a deeper connection between people and the ocean. Based in Maui, Hawaii, PWF operates globally with programs in Australia, Ecuador, Chile, and Japan, combining cutting-edge research, conservation efforts, and educational initiatives to address key threats such as climate change, marine pollution, and unsustainable tourism.
PWF’s innovative programs include community cleanups, citizen science projects, and educational experiences like Ocean Camp, Keiki Whalewatch, and Ocean Career Quest, which engage thousands annually and empower the next generation of ocean stewards. The organization’s impact is amplified by its partnerships with local communities, global stakeholders, and its 10,000+ members worldwide.
Recognized as a pioneer in sustainable marine tourism, PWF has removed over 200,000 pieces of debris from Maui’s coastlines, developed international best practices for whale watching, and continues to champion equity and inclusion in all its efforts. Governed by a volunteer board and guided by a commitment to integrity, respect, and community, Pacific Whale Foundation remains a leader in ocean conservation and advocacy.
